Votes have started trickling in for the Whanganui district local body elections.

Whanganui electoral officer Noeline Moosman said as of 12 noon on Wednesday, 1875 had been returned. More than 31,000 voting papers were sent out in the Whanganui district.

Ms Moosman said voters should have received their voting papers in the mail by now. She said that if anyone had not yet received their voting papers, they should contact her on 3490001.

Voting in the local government elections is by postal vote. Voting closes at 12 noon on October 8. You must drop your completed voting papers off at the council by this date, or post them no later than October 5.

Whanganui's voter turn-out in the 2013 local government elections was 58 per cent - or 18,135 votes - making it one of the higher voter turn-outs in the country.
