Most oppose fluoridation, poll finds

By Staff Reporter

Most people in Whanganui are still against having fluoride in the water, if the latest Chronicle poll is a guide.

Last month, the Government ruled that district health boards, rather than the councils, would decide whether our tap water has fluoride added.

Health professionals consider fluoride to be vital to reducing tooth decay in children, while others maintain it has harmful side effects. We asked our online readers for their views:

-The district health board should decide what's best - 12pc

-Fluoride is a poison and should not be in our water - 57pc

-Water should have fluoride added to help save children's teeth - 31pc.

-Go to for our latest poll asking for your views on the proposed wastewater treatment plant inquiry.
