A Whanganui man in his 50s spent Sunday night trapped in his vehicle after it crashed down a bank on the River Rd.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Ranana at about 7.45am.

He was discovered by his family trapped in a vehicle that had crashed down a bank when they went searching for him yesterday morning.

The man was airlifted to hospital in a stable condition by the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter.

Raetihi firefighters freed the man from the vehicle and he was stabilised by the onboard intensive care paramedic.
