Wanganui people will join a nationwide series of rallies against the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement on Saturday.
The rally will start at the steel ball sculpture near the River Traders' Market site at 1pm, before marching to Majestic Square. There speakers will discuss concerns about the impact of the TPPA on New Zealand and Wanganui. The details of the deal, between 12 countries, including New Zealand and the United States, have been kept behind closed doors.
Talks in Hawaii ended recently without a final agreement. Trade Minister Tim Groser said the 12 nations involved were down to three final issues and will meet again to iron those out.
Speakers at the Wanganui rally include Te Oranganui Iwi Health Authority's Nancy Tuaine, Phil Rewiti, Nelson Lebo, deputy mayor Hamish McDouall, and David Hughes.
Democracy and sovereignty, safeguarding food supply, corporate and banking activities, maintaining Pharmac's ability to provide affordable medicine and the privatisation of health services, along with rangatiratanga and kawanatanga, will all be on the agenda.
