The heavy rain has brought down more than 300 slips on roads across the Wanganui district, and more are expected.
Wanganui District Council infrastructure spokesman, councillor Ray Stevens, said council contractors Downer had been working "flat out" to keep roads open.
Mr Stevens said, apart from the massive slip at Aranui Bluff on the Mangamahu Rd, which has completely blocked that access, all the roads have been kept open.
He said the priority was to keep existing roads open by dealing with minor slips as they happen.
"The major jobs such as Aranui Bluff will be properly assessed before we make any decision on what the next steps will be. That will take a day or two," he said.
