Caroline Norton, newly elected Wanganui president of the Hospitality Association of New Zealand, is urging both members and non-members to get more involved in the industry.
Ms Norton said the hospitality industry faced a number of legislative changes since central government handed local authorities more power, particularly where alcohol was involved.
"It's never been more important to get involved in the industry you have made your livelihood," she said yesterday.
"As councils begin the process of forming their local alcohol policies, I urge members and non-members to make submissions, or they risk others running their business."
Issues likely to be focused on by councils include opening hours and the location of new premises, including sensitive areas close to childcare centres, schools, churches and marae.
