Adrian Rurawhe has wrested the Te Tai Hauauru seat back for the Labour Party.
The Ratana man won 7092 votes with the Maori Party's Chris McKenzie getting 5639.
The race was always expected to be tight after long-serving Maori Party MP Tariana Turia stepped down this year and it was seen as Labour's chance to gain the seat back.
Polls had showed it was too close to pick.
"In respect to Chris McKenzie, I actually did write two speeches, I wrote a concession speech as well," Mr Rurawhe said.
