St James Presbyterian church in Wanganui East has been given a pass mark in terms of earthquake building standards but the church board says it will even be getting that assessment evaluated to ensure the congregation is safe.
A claim has been made to the Chronicle that the building is dangerous.
Neil Hooker, the parish secretary, said that, like other Presbyterian churches around the country, St James had to have its property checked.
This followed a directive from Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa NZ in the wake of the Christchurch earthquakes and was sent out in the second half of 2012.
Mr Hooker was responding to a letter to the Wanganui Chronicle which claimed the church, the hall, kitchen and lounge, on the corner of Helmore St and Boydfield St, were all well below the building code requirements and because of that "should be immediately vacated".
