Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia has said she is "thrilled" for New Zealand Order of Merit recipient Vera Wilson.
"I am told that the honour awarded to Vera is the third in an impressive whakapapa of community service throughout her particular whanau line," Ms Turia said.
Kui Pura McGregor was one of the first women to be decorated when she received her OBE in 1919, and Rumatiki Wright received the MBE in 1959.
"Both of these women dedicated themselves to advancing the wellbeing of our people and Vera certainly continues that fine history," she said.
"There would rarely be a hui go by in Whanganui without Vera ready to support with her guitar and a song.
