Spud BrogdenSpud Brogden says he's known by his childhood nickname all around the world where he sells his daffodils.
Back home in Normanby, and when he competes, he's known for his gladioli when he's up against rival growers Wanganui's Wayne Hughes and Hunterville's David Luty's.
The weekend's champion bloom Lowland Queen was Mr Brogden's first in four years in Wanganui.
He's been growing gladioli for almost 70 years now; he first started growing them when he was at primary school.
"My mother used to put me in an apple box when I was very young, when she helped my father in his business growing daffodils for sale," he says, acknowledging that growing things is in his genes.
