Tony Symes can't remember exactly how long he has been organising lamb judging at the Waverley A&P Show - but he thinks it's about 40 years.
"The entries are still strong. They're about the same as last year, which is good because this is a big dairy area," he said.
The show has an ongoing arrangement with Silver Fern Farms, the owner of the Waitotara meatworks. It makes for two-tiered judging.
The 130 export lambs penned in their threes for judging on Tuesday get judged once "on the hoof".
Then they are taken to the meatworks, killed and their carcasses are judged "on the hook".
First in this category were G and G Lennox, then Seamus Murphy, Tony Wilson and E R Lennox.
About 20 other lambs are gift lambs, given to the A & P Show by their owners. They are judged individually and separately.
First in that category was the Southdown Romney cross lamb supplied by Nigel and Diane Alexander.
Mr Alexander is mainly a beef fattening farmer. He said he only had about 40 ewes but enters every year.
He chose his best 10 lambs and Guy Lennox picked one of them to enter in the gift lamb category - his winner.
Second in that category was K Murphy, followed by I and A Symes and Angus Wilson.
The prizes are all in cash and amount to about $800, leaving $2000 from the sale of gift lambs as a donation toward running the show.
