Palmerston North driver Andy McCabe has taken out the NZ Welding School World Invitation Superstock Championships last night.
More than 8000 diehard fans were on hand to see McCabe (68 points) take out the three heat final at SG Equipment Paradise Valley Raceway, Rotorua. Following four points behind McCabe was Rotorua's David Elsworth (64) and Palmerston North's Peter Bengston (63).
Heading into the third and final heat, McCabe lead the field on 44 points, followed closely behind him by Bengston, Simon Joblin, Graeme Barr and Shane Harwood all on 42 points.
McCabe held off a strong challenge from Elsworth who won the final race followed closely behind by Joe Faram in third.
Last year's champion Peter Rees had a nightmare night with two DNFs in the first and last heat and was relegated from first to second in the only race he did finish.
In The Daily Post sponsored Bay of Plenty Saloons Championships Brent McClymont was too strong for the 10 strong field.
McClymont (58 points) won the first two heats easily and showed his courage and skill in the last heat to come from the back of the grid to finish third. Chris Taylor (54) finished second followed by Paul Gressy on 52.
