Editorial: Get real and post a card this year

By Kristin Macfarlane

It's very common to receive and send birthday and Christmas messages via your internet self.

We live in a digital world where we "follow" strangers, "poke" our friends, "like" what people have to show and say and update the world about what food we are enjoying at the time.

So, it's no surprise that birthday and Christmas greetings and messages are shared this way too. It's fast, we can do it last minute and it's easy.

In the last week a former colleague sent many of us in the newsroom a Christmas card - the old-fashioned way. It brought a smile to a few faces.

For some it was the first "real" Christmas card we had received and a lovely thought. As the years go by and further into the digital world we go, "real" Christmas and birthday cards seem to become more scarce - it kind of seems a bit of a novelty when they do arrive.

Admittedly, until I received that card, I hadn't thought about sending cards to friends, family or contacts because I'm probably too caught up in the digital world ...

there is probably an app I can buy or download that will automatically send something, I'm sure.

How sad is that?

Gone are the days when you used to decorate the living room with the dozens of Christmas cards filled with thoughtful messages during the festive season. Now, the majority of them are digital and often deleted or ignored.

It's not too late, though. Go and pick up a pack of Christmas cards and send them to your loved ones. I'm sure the recipients will get a nice surprise.

No doubt, if you log on to your Facebook or Twitter accounts in the lead-up to Christmas you'll probably receive a few group Christmas messages asking you all to be safe and have fun. Though not personal, give it a like anyway.
