Rotorua Girls' High School has beaten out more than 100 other schools, tying for third at the 2016 national Stage Challenge awards.

The announcement was made today after national judge Cate Prestidge viewed footage of schools that placed at every event throughout the country.

She focused on concept, soundtrack and drama when determining the awards.

First place was awarded to Wanganui High School for their powerful performance, 29 below.

Rotorua Girls' High School, who performed Looking Back, Moving Forward, shared third place with Hawera High School.

Now in its 24th year, 2016 was another stellar Stage Challenge year, as youth throughout the nation continued to raise the bar with their creativity and expression.

Ms Prestidge said the thinking and research behind many performances was exceptional and strong.

"Creative work was apparent in all aspects of the entries from set and costume design to the narratives and performances."
