Romance writer Nalini Singh was among popular adults' fiction authors at the Rotorua District Library in 2015.

A New Zealand author on the New York Times bestsellers list and the creator of the The Very Hungry Caterpillar were among Rotorua's favourite writers last year.

Rotorua District Library programmes co-ordinator Karisma Vala said romance writer Nalini Singh was among popular adults' fiction authors at the library in 2015.

That was significant because the New York Times bestselling author was a New Zealander.

Other popular adults' authors were James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Anna Jacobs and Danielle Steel.

Ms Vala said the most popular fiction titles for adults right now included Wilbur Smith's Vicious Circle, Jodi Picoult's Leaving Time and The Liar by Nora Roberts.

Robert Muchamore was one of the most popular authors among teenagers in the area. He was best know for his Cherub adventure series.

Another popular teen choice was Australian fantasy author John Flanagan.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar author Eric Carle was a favourite with children, as was Sally Sutton, who writes books about trucks and other vehicles.

Ms Vala said print books remained far more popular than electronic ones, though there was growing interest in learning how to use e-books.

The library offers free computer training classes.
