Police investigating a family violence-related assault on Fairy Springs Rd want to hear from witnesses, including members of the public who intervened in the incident.
Cries for help woke residents of Fairy Springs Rd, near the intersection of Kea St in the early hours of Sunday morning.
A man has been arrested and appeared in the Whanganui District Court this morning charged with assault with intent to injure.
During the assault, a member of the public intervened and prevented the assault from continuing. A vehicle, described as a white vehicle, also pulled up and offered assistance. The occupants are described as male Caucasians in their late teens to early 20s.
Police would like to speak to the occupants of that vehicle, and any other witnesses to the assault.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Melissa Ruru of the Rotorua CIB on (07) 349 9400. Information can also be provided anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
"We always need the assistance of members of the public; they are our eyes and ears and can play an important role in breaking the cycle of violence that occurs in too many relationships and families.
"We want safer families in safer communities so if you know of friends, family or work colleagues who are the perpetrators or victims of family violence, speak up and seek help for them," Constable Ruru said.
