When it came to weddings The Rotorua Daily Post Bride of the Year followed tradition - last night's black tie gala started 13 minutes late thanks to a late bride.

The awards night also incorporated the Wedding Industry Awards, which recognised outstanding wedding suppliers.

There were 14 brides competing for the overall award which had the top prize of a holiday to Rarotonga.

Second placing, and winner of the People's Choice award - which was decided by online voting - was won by Nehsha Moynihan, who had almost twice the votes of the others.

Third placing went to Mandy Hamon.

Rotorua Daily Post advertising manager Janine Davy said judging had been tough.

"It's not a beauty pageant, the brides had to write an essay and be interviewed. It was about the overall day, if they would do anything different, the planning. We also talked about married life.
