Tauranga's median house sale price hit $600,000 in December, according to the Real Estate Institute NZ.

This was up a whopping $130,000 on the same month a year earlier, and up $10,000 on November's average sale price.

REINZ figures released today showed 121 homes were sold in Tauranga in December, compared with 163 the previous month and 208 in December 2015.

REINZ chief executive Bindi Norwell said there was an underlying trend of rising house prices across New Zealand, with all regions recording year-on-year increases in median prices.

However, sales volumes were flat or falling in many parts of the country.

Nationally, the median sale price rose 11 per cent to $516,000 year-on-year. This was slightly down from November's record $520,000. Outside Auckland, December's median price was $420,000.
