State Highway 29 near Tauranga has been closed after a rubbish truck lost its trailer near the intersection with Redwood Lane. Traffic was brought to a standstill. We were there.

A container fell off a truck on the Kaimai Range and bounced over a car before landing on the road blocking one lane of a major highway.

Sergeant Wayne Hunter told a photographer at the crash scene that the truck had been coming around a corner when the container, which was full of rubbish, fell off the truck, bounced over a car, and landed on the road about 11am.

The crash happened on State Highway 29, near Redwood lane, blocking the south-bound lane for a couple of hours.

A police spokeswoman said the driver was not hurt but the blockage caused delays.

''We are there and helping direct traffic. Traffic can get through and around, but there might be delays,'' the spokeswoman said.

A crane was brought in to pick up the container and put it on another truck.

The road was down to one lane while being cleared but traffic was moving slowly.
