Downed powerlines trap man in car after Whangarei crash

Police are at an accident on Otaika Rd, Whangarei where a man is trapped by downed powerlines.

A man is trapped in his car with powerlines around it after he hit a lamppole in Whangarei.

Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of Otaika Rd/ State Highway One and Tarewa Rd shortly before 10am today.

A witness said the green Toyota appeared to have hit the pole head-on, which has then taken down powerlines across the state highway.

The man has to stay inside the car until Northpower says it is safe to leave.

Emergency services are at the crash. No other vehicles are involved.

The road is down to one lane and traffic is being diverted around the scene.
