5.00pm Both lanes are now open and the caravan has been cleared from the road.

UPDATE: State Highway 2 near Whakamarama remains closed after a caravan flipped, blocking both lanes of traffic.

Police said traffic was building up and warned there would be delays, particularly for motorists heading north.

It was not yet known how long the road will remain closed for.

A diversion was in place at Barrett Road

Earlier: State Highway 2 near Whakamarama is blocked after a caravan crashed in the area.

A caravan is blocking both lanes of the highway after it flipped onto its roof between Barrett and Youngson Rds.

A police media spokeswoman said according to initial reports, the caravan was extensively damaged but there did not appear to be any injuries.

The crash happened about 500m south of the Omokoroa intersection, she said.

The police had received multiple phone calls about the crash, which happened just before 3pm.

The spokeswoman said traffic was reportedly building up around the crash.

Diversions are expected to be put in place near Youngson Rd.
