Police have warned motorists of severe delays on the city bound Te Ngae Rd after a truck dropped wet tar on the road.

A Police North Comms spokesman said police were advising of significant delays while the spill, which happened around 11.30am could be cleared.

It is at the intersection of Te Ngae Rd and Sala St on the city bound lane.

A single lane has been reopened but there is no left turn into Sala St.

A spokesman said it would be at least 3pm before the road would be cleared as the tar was drying and sticking to the original surface.
