The men took the bragging rights after Luke McDonald won the Doubtless Bay Line & Rod Fishing Club's annual in the battle of the sexes by catching a 8.7kg snapper from Spot X earlier this month.
The trophy in the annual Mens vs Ladies competition held on July 13-14 is traditionally contested between the club's men and women as judged by the biggest snapper weighed in by either sex respectively. The event report noted the weekend weather behaved itself particularly well on the Saturday with light winds and little swell and there was more of the same on the Sunday.
Macdonald's 8.7kg fish secured the trophy for the men with stablemate Dave Pickering's snapper of 8.4kg snapper ending up a close second, while the ladies' biggest fish, at 7.35kg by Julie Scott, came in at 3rd heaviest overall.
"Maybe next year the girls will get that trophy!" the club report added, going on to mention that Phil Barber weighed in a 14.05kg kingfish which was great to see. Also thanked were the event's two main sponsors representing local businesses in Kerikeri and Cooper's Beach.
