Police are still working to identify the man who was found dead on rocks at Whangarei Heads.
Investigations are under way following the discovery of the man's body near the northern end of Kauri Mountain Beach at around 6.15pm on Wednesday.
The spot where the man was found is an area of high cliffs and a rocky beach, and it was just about low tide when he was discovered.
An initial assessment suggested he had possibly been washed off rocks or fallen from a cliff. It's believed the man may have been fishing.
Police said the man is possibly in his 30s, around 182cm in height, of slim build with a slim face and a medium length beard.
The man was found by a couple of local people who were going fishing.
Detective Sergeant Dave Wilkinson said at this stage police do not believe there were any suspicious circumstances surrounding the man's death, however there were still a number of inquiries to make.
"We believe there is a possibility that the man was in the area fishing."
Mr Wilkinson said police were still seeking to identify him at edition time yesterday and are asking for anyone who may have any information to contact Whangarei police on 09 430 4500.
"We are also asking for anyone who was in the area yesterday and saw anything that may assist police to please let us know," he said.
