Morning nose to tail
A nose to tail accident south of Whangarei disrupted motorists on their morning commute yesterday. Police said no one was injured in the accident on a State Highway 1 bridge north of the intersection with Loop Rd about 8.15am.
Car ploughs into bridge
Emergency services were called to isolated Nukutawhiti, on Mangakahia Rd just south of Twin Bridges, after a car smashed into a one-way bridge about 12.15pm on Tuesday.
Kaikohe's deputy fire chief, Wiremu Matene, said the car was extensively damaged but the driver and sole occupant was uninjured thanks to air bags and the fact he was wearing a seat belt.
The man said a tyre blowout had caused the crash. Firefighters were also dispatched from Whangarei but were stood down before they reached the scene.
Leitch's own words
An August 15 Northern Advocate story described a candidate as saying "let's be realistic, I won't get in anyway" in relation to Democrats for Social Credit's Chris Leitch.
The description attempted to paraphrase what Mr Leitch told students at a Kamo High School election meeting, and was wrongly presented as a direct quote. Mr Leitch's direct quote to students was:
"Okay, well I'm going to deal with this in a slightly different way because I come from a smaller party and I can't promise you that I'm going to do lots because my party's not going to be in government and I'm not. I'd like to be an MP though because there are some things I can do."
