Whangarei cyclists concerned about the rubbish seen regularly on a race circuit they used decided to do something about it.
And on Saturday about a a dozen Marsden Wheelers Cycling Club members were surprised to collect 30 large bags of rubbish from the 13km circuit on the Jordan Valley Rd, and other roads, in Hikurangi.
Club member Bob Starr said members had noticed a lot of rubbish at the side of the road while on their circuit and felt they had to do something to improve the situation.
He said the clean-up crew picked up a wide range of general rubbish, but there were a lot of RTD bottles, energy drink bottles, plastic bottles and baling plastic picked up during the more than two hours they spent on the task.
"And there were a few dirty disposable nappies as well. It was a surprise to get that much really, but we had noticed a lot rubbish at the side of the road while we were out riding," he said.
