The contentious decision to grant a fourth liquor off-licence for Onerahi is being appealed.
After a public hearing on December 10, the Whangarei District Licensing Committee gave permission for businessman Edward Jones to open a Liquor Centre in the old ASB building in the Onerahi shopping centre.
It would be the fourth off-licence in the suburb, but the application drew widespread opposition from the community and health officials.
Whangarei District Council group manager for district living Paul Dell said at the deadline for appeal last Tuesday, two had been lodged. One was by the Northland District Health Board's medical officer of health and the other by concerned Onerahi residents.
The issue now goes to the national Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority (ARLA) based in Wellington.
