Kawakawa police are facing one of their toughest challenges yet - will they bow to pressure to don pink tutus and angel wings when they run the Kerikeri Half Marathon for charity?
Five officers, equivalent to 71 per cent of Kawakawa's police force, have signed up so far to run in the November 15 event. They will be raising money for the Bald Angels, a Mid North trust which aims to help disadvantaged children.
Sergeant Kevin Milne is now challenging other stations to match Kawakawa's effort.
Mr Milne said his involvement started when Bald Angels founder Therese Wickbom placed a post on the Central Bay of Islands Community Watch Facebook page. The page is normally reserved for police and neighbourhood watch posts so he was about to delete it.
"But then I thought better of it. They're raising money for sick kids, and I'm a bit of an old softie."
