A gas leak temporarily closed a central city street in Whangarei this morning. However, firefighters were quick to establish where the leak was in Rathbone St just before 9am.
The street was shut down with the help of police while firefighters cordoned off four businesses. Senior Station Officer Brad Cunningham said a cafe owner raised the alarm after smelling gas and hearing a hissing noise.
Mr Cunningham said it was the connection at the front of the cafe that was leaking and the gas company were called and fixed the fault.
The street was opened again about 9.25am.
