A Whangarei court case made headlines around the country after egg producer John Garnett falsely sold 2.47 million caged hen eggs as free-range.
The commission estimated that the company Garnett owned at the time - Forest Hill Farm - made an additional $376,000 from the sale of more than 206,000 dozen falsely labelled eggs with a retail value in excess of $1 million.
But inquiries by The Northern Advocate have found the rules surrounding exactly what a free-range egg is are fairly loose.
Free-range eggs are defined as eggs produced by poultry that are kept in natural conditions with freedom of movement.
There are no regulations that control the definition of a free-range egg, and consumers are reliant on the honesty of egg farmers to identify eggs correctly.
