Five helicopters are working to control a scrub fire being fanned by strong winds in the Far North.
The fire service were alerted to the blaze at Hihi about 1pm today.
The fire was originally threatening a house about 3km from the popular Hihi holiday camp ground. However the house was out of danger but the fire had spread through scrub covering an area of about 8 hectares.
Volunteer firefighters from Mangonui and Kaitaia were called in as well as rural fire parties from Kairkari and Taupo Bay.
The area was not easily accessible so the choppers with monsoon buckets were called in.
