A Dargaville writer's first published book will feature as part of the Dargaville Library's school holiday programme.

The children's picture book Fearless Fred and the Dragon by local author Maureen Sudlow was shortlisted for the 2012 Storylines Joy Cowley Award.

Attractive illustrations by Kate Quin-Mereweather complement the rhyming narrative, which follows Fred on an exciting journey.

Aimed at children aged from 4 upwards the book is due to appear in bookshops this month.

The hero is a brave knight wearing tinfoil armour who along with a canine friend overcomes dragons and dark swamps.

Mrs Sudlow will join children at the library on May 1 at 10.30am to read the story and take part in fun activities associated with the story.

Mrs Sudlow has read to children at Dargaville Library before, but not from her own writing, and is pleased her book's first public outing is in Dargaville.

Library Manager Paula Guy Stuve predicts a great morning for the children.
