Black Sticks hockey player Alana Millington isn't the only one in her family to get a taste of the Olympic Games.
Millington's 2-year-old son, Jordan Laybourn, was the official torch bearer for the Educare North Education and Child Care mini-Olympic Games at Kensington Stadium yesterday.
Dressed in gumboots and an All Blacks rugby jersey covered by a korowai cloak the children at Tikipunga Educare centre created, the pre-schooler posed for photos with the gold-painted cardboard torch during the opening lap.
He was accompanied by playmate Larissa Attwood, 2, and Educare North's longest-serving staff member, Colleen Steadman, as they led 180 toddlers separated into their eight centres around the stadium's basketball courts.
The event was an extension of the work each centre had done to get the youngsters interested in the Olympic Games, Educare North general manager Marianne Wood said: "It makes the children aware of the wider community, including what is happening out there in the world."
