Searching for best marae kai
Mid North marae will know within days who is the district's best host. The Marae Master Cookoff - inspired by the TV series MasterChef and organised by Maori health provider Te Hau Ora o Kaikohe - sees marae compete to do the best job of hosting a group of kuia and kaumatua for a three-course lunch, with the guests themselves rating each marae's kai for taste, healthiness and presentation.
The 2012 contestants were Okaihau College, Kohewhata Marae (Kaikohe) and Parawhenua Marae (Ohaeawai); the winner will be announced at a function at Kaikohe Baptist Church from 11am on Friday and will receive $1500 towards any marae project.
