NAILING 22 wins has secured Hastings trainer John Bary a top-20 position in his trade for the gallops season coming to an end next month in New Zealand.
"It's been a quiet year as far as black types go but I'm pretty pleased with the way I've finished nationally," Bary said last night after winning two races in the Fruitfed Supplies-sponsored meeting in Hastings on Thursday.
Apprentice jockey Lee Magorrian started Bary's day on a high note with a win on Donna Beel in the Water Supply Products Maiden 3-year-old dash over 1200m, catching all tipsters in the raceday programme on the hop.
The Bay filly, which Chris and Ken Russell (Russell Roads businessmen) own, finished half a length in front of favourite Sasanof's Hero and Samantha Collett with Dreamcruza and Darryl Bradley a long head behind them.
"He [Magorrian] rode Cool Hand Duke for us at Te Rapa and won [early this month] so I wanted him to ride the filly [Donna Beel] the same way and he more or less went out and did the job yesterday," Bary explained.
