Lifeguards and their supporters are out on the streets of Hawke's Bay at the moment for a week-long appeal for donations for their local surf lifesaving clubs.
The appeal culminates with National Jandal Day tomorrow, in which businesses are encouraged to register to help raise funds.
Members from Ocean Beach Kiwi, Pacific, Waimarama and Westshore lifesaving clubs will be stationed throughout the Bay with collection buckets asking the local community for support. The money raised will go towards local club costs that include training lifeguards and buying and maintaining equipment.
National Jandal Day Hawke's Bay co-ordinator Bronwyn Harman said lifeguards undertook a significant amount of work.
"This is kind of the only real opportunity for them to get some profile and awareness and get people to fundraise," she said. "We really need the support of the local community in order to continue to allow the lifeguards to continue to save lives on our local beaches.
"These are lifeguards that are volunteering their time to support the community, so we're asking the community to support them."
As well as the street appeal, businesses, schools and organisations could register for National Jandal Day on Friday.
"The intention is to get businesses and organisations and schools to register for Jandal Day.
"It's kind of, you know, the normal charity support for a business but we've added in the fun component."
Local business Bay Espresso is also getting behind the initiative with discount books available to purchase for only $20 and local surf clubs are selling T-shirts.
