The Waikato Interfaith Council says Hamilton City Council will open its meetings with an interfaith prayer.
Prayers will be led by Waikato faith leaders from the Bahi, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Mormon and Muslim communities.
Interfaith council representatives say the positive action sends an enthusiastic message of inclusion to all society and reflects the city's changing demographics.
"We hope prayers, led by a more representative selection of faith leaders, may help guide and encourage our mayor and councillors in fulfilling the obligations for which they have been elected."
