A new community space in Hamilton's Garden Place Library will be launched next month.

Kootuitui, Maori for connect, will be opened by Mayor Julie Hardaker on March 12 and operate weekdays.

Lifelong learning librarian Lisa Pritchard says part of the initiative is a 'hot desk' providing an informal environment for community organisations and groups to speak to library users.

Hamilton Budgeting Advice, Hamilton Hearing Association, Life Unlimited and English Language Partners have signed up to share knowledge and information through Kootuitui.

Author Sharon Holt has volunteered to offer advice on how people can break into publishing.

Groups and individuals using Kootuitui to share information will also be able display their promotional material.

Ms Pritchard says the ground floor facility will include two noticeboards where groups can post promotion for community events.

"We're keen to hear from other groups or individuals keen to take advantage of the opportunity," she says.

Kootuitui is among several initiatives being rolled out as Hamilton City Libraries become community hubs for information, events and activities alongside their traditional services.
