Focus on ethnic diversity

Garden Place will come alive next week when Hamilton's vibrant multicultural community is celebrated.

The Indigo Festival, first held in 2000, will run from November 29 to December 1.

Event co-ordinator Patricia Novao says the festival is an opportunity for communities to showcase their talents, values and customs while providing Hamilton with a taste of other cultures.

All festival events are in Garden Place or the central library.

New this year is the Indigo Youth Got Talent competition where teenagers will dance, sing and and offer contemporary performances.

Other highlights include a street parade, music and cultural performances, a fashion parade, art exhibitions and a film festival.

Patricia said the interaction of cultures promotes understanding, social cohesion and stronger, more inclusive communities. "This event is colourful, vibrant and a celebration of life."
