DVD Review: The Hunger Games (+trailer)

You would have to have spent a year on the moon to not have heard of The Hunger Games phenomenon.

Based on the first instalment of author Suzanne Collins' trilogy, The Hunger Games was one of the big hits of the year in cinemas across the world.

And while teenage girls may have been a main market segment, this is a great movie for viewers across many age groups.

The Hunger Games concept came to Collins while watching television.

Flicking between a war documentary and a reality show, the images began to blur together and she knew she had something.

We find ourselves in the futuristic, dystopian society of Panem, where 12 districts are ruled without dispute by the Capitol.

Every year, the 12 districts are required to produce a male and female tribute to compete in the annual Hunger Games.

The games are designed for the entertainment and amusement of the elite citizens, and only one tribute will emerge from the battlefield alive.

When Primrose (Willow Shields), the younger sister of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), is selected to represent her district, Katniss volunteers in her place.

She and fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) are pitted against each other, and the 22 other tributes, in a fight for their lives.

The Hunger Games is well worth a watch, whatever your age.
