Beach volleyball: Battle on beach
Mount Maunganui's main beach hosted the Bay Secondary Schools beach volleyball championships last weekend.
Almost 50 teams entered from eight schools across the Bay of Plenty all with the goal to be top in the Bay. The weather was awesome and competitors made good use of the umbrellas and sunscreen provided by the Cancer Society. The morning was action packed with all teams battling to get out of their pool and advance through the tournament. The afternoon was just as busy with quarters, semis and finals as well as playoffs.
The Tauranga Girls' College pairing of Emma Bain and Kiana Tawa held off Alex Campbell-Smith and Michaela Wooler from Bethlehem College to win the junior girls' division. Mount Maunganui College won the junior boys' final beating Western Heights High School.
The senior girls' final was a battle between two Otumoetai College teams of Abbie Meredith and Julia Hartley v Kiahani Strickland and Brooke Palmer. Both teams showed good skills but Abbie Meredith and Julia Hartley's experience paid off in the end to secure the win.
The senior boys' final was a battle between two Tauranga Boys' College teams, Brad Fullerton and Burton McAdam v Thomas Reid and Joseph Winstanley. Both teams put up a great fight and the game was played at a high level with Brad Fullerton and Burton McAdam outlasting their opposition to take the title.

Cricket: Defence starts
The Bay of Plenty Development team start their defence of the ND Development competition title when they play Waikato Valley at the Cambridge Square on Sunday.
Last season the Bay of Plenty team won the Basil McBurney trophy for the first time for a number of seasons. On the way to winning the symbol of ND Development superiority, they defeated Counties Manukau, Waikato Valley and Northland and had already wrapped up the title when Hamilton narrowly defeated them.
The Bay of Plenty Development team selected to play Waikato Valley is a good mix of experience and youth. Good form in the ND Development competition can lead to a call-up for the senior representative side. One player to use the Bay Development pathway to good effect is Tommy Clout, who played his first game for the Bay first XI last Sunday.
Bay of Plenty Development captain Peter Wood showcased his talent with the bat in the latest round of the Baywide Cup last weekend, blasting 103no for Central against Baywide heavyweights Mount Maunganui.
One Bay player who will have fond memories of facing Waikato Valley is Te Puke's Mitch McCann. In 2008, the dashing batsman wrote his own piece of Bay of Plenty cricket history, smashing a century on debut for the Development team. McCann carried his bat to finish with an unbeaten 110 as the Bay side cruised to victory.
The development team tradition of promoting young talent continues with the selection of Tauranga Boys' College all rounder Tom MacRury. The talented youngster has been in outstanding early season form in both Baywide and schools cricket.
