Slower speed limits are being proposed for a busy section of Te Puke Highway.
The Western Bay of Plenty District Council will propose to change the current speed limit on the section of highway through Waitangi, on the souther outskirts of the township, from 70km/h to 50km/h.
The council also plans to introduce electronic 40km/h speed signs that activate during school drop off and pick up times.
The proposal opens for public consultation today.
The council's transport manager Alex Finn said the suggested changes aimed to provide a safer environment for pedestrians and students at Waitangi (Te Matai) School, also known as Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Matai.
