Work is being done to alleviate congestion on State Highway 29A near Welcome Bay.
The right turn bay at the Welcome Bay Rd roundabout with SH29A will be extended, offering eastbound motorists the chance to avoid heavy congestion with northbound traffic.
The NZ Transport Agency said the extension was to ''better cope with the afternoon traffic queues''.
The extension is one of several road work projects being carried out around the Bay of Plenty.
The agency warned motorists to take greater care when approaching SH36 at the Keenan Rd intersection while contractors created a turning lane.
At the SH2/Te Puna Rd intersection, major earthworks started today. Traffic flow management will be in place and extra care will be required to stay within the narrowed lanes.
Meanwhile, work is continuing at the Hairini/Maungatapu underpass.
