A second tree has come down across a Western Bay road.

A fire service northern communications spokesman said firefighters were on the way to help clear the tree which was blocking Plummers Point Rd near the intersection with SH2.

It was blocking about two-thirds of the road.

Motorists were earlier warned to take care on State Highway 2 north of Tauranga after a tree fell onto the main highway near Bethlehem.

A reporter at the scene said the tree was blocking a lane near the Wairoa Bridge but traffic was still moving, albeit slowly.

The tree appeared to have been blown down by strong winds, he said.

Contractors had been called to clear the fallen tree.
