Three Western Bay locals are in Tauranga Hospital, including two in intensive care, after a head-on collision between two vehicles on State Highway 2.

A police spokesperson said the crash happened just before 6pm last night on the stretch of highway between Aongatete Rd and Morton Rd about 10 kms south of Katikati.

One patient was trapped inside her van for a short time, the spokesperson said.

A Tauranga woman being treated in a hospital ward was in moderate condition.

The other two patients, a Tauranga man and a Katikati woman, were both in a serious condition in the intensive care unit, a hospital spokesperson said.

The Serious Crash Unit were investigating the crash, which resulted in the road being closed until around midnight.

No other details about the crash were available at this time.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the crash.

Call Tauranga Police on 07 5774300 or provide the information anonymously via the Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
