Tauranga City Council, assisted by Mount Maunganui Surf Life Saving and police, is closing access to the Mount and the Mauao base track again.

Moturiki Island (Leisure Island) is also being assessed at this stage.

Significant swell combined with the upcoming high tide are causing waves reaching the base track already, making it potentially unsafe.

They anticipate that the base track would be reopened around 12.30pm.

Other tracks up Mauao remain open in the meantime.
