A cyclist has been hurt in a crash with a car on the corner of Devonport Rd and 7th Ave.

A police spokesman said the report came in at 3.55pm and a nurse on the scene was able to help.

A St John northern communications spokeswoman said the cyclist was taken to Tauranga Hospital with serious injuries.

The central Tauranga intersection has been closed and diversions are in place.

A reporter at the scene said there appeared to be a damaged bicycle on the road and someone on a stretcher had been put into a waiting ambulance.

Backpacks and a picnic blanket lay on the ground next to the warped bicycle.

Traffic is significantly backed up, the reporter said.

A car further up the road had a smashed windscreen.

Traffic is asked to avoid the area if possible, as emergency services attend the scene.
