More than 100 volunteers rallied together on Saturday to transform an empty plot of land into Tauranga's newest community gardens.
With the organisation of Good Neighbour's Let's Get Growing group and the support of the Bethlehem Community Church for the land, the volunteers built gardens from the bottom-up with a huge amount of donated goods.
Good Neighbour community garden co-ordinator Anne Gourley said the idea of community gardens had been around for a long time, especially in England, but Tauranga was just catching on.
The gardens were about more than just growing plants as they also brought people together and provided the opportunity for organic food.
The quickbuild day aimed to build the individual garden frames and complete the 'lasagne-style' layered filling so people could start planting in the next few weeks.
