A 41-year-old woman was airlifted to Tauranga Hospital overnight with serious head and chest injuries after her car collided with a horse at Te Kaha.

The Tauranga based Trustpower TECT Rescue helicopter was called to the crash at Te Kaha, east of Omaio, at 9.30pm.

The woman was travelling with two young children who were unharmed in the crash.

The car's roof was ripped off in the crash and it was unknown what happened to the horse.

The helicopter was dispatched because of the remote location and the extent of the patients injuries, she was flown to Tauranga hospital in a serious condition.
