Fire fighters were called to the fire at 4.55pm and now three trucks from Te Puke, including their water tanker, plus trucks from Maketu and Greerton are fighting the blaze.

EARLIER at 5.10pm: A caller to the Bay of Plenty Times said traffic was at a standstill in Te Puke and they had seen the fire brigade had been called out.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said the build up was caused by road resealing and a 50km/h speed restriction being done between Manoeka Rd and the township.

It is understood the fire and the traffic are not connected.
